Richland Two Launches Foundations for Learning—Boosting School Readiness from Birth!

Richland School District Two Superintendent Dr. Kim D. Moore is taking bold and loving steps towards bridging the gap to early learning readiness for children. This week she launched Richland Two's Foundations for Learning program, an early childhood initiative designed to promote school readiness from birth. In partnership with Reach Out and Read SC, and the Richland Two Education Foundation, the academic success of young children will begin long before a child enters preschool or kindergarten.

Foundations for Learning provides parents of newborns and toddlers with literacy, social, physical, and cognitive development resources. “Fewer children are walking into our classrooms with the basic skills they need to thrive in their early years. We are offering real solutions by giving parents some essentials through pediatricians’ offices. Families will receive a Lovie comfort blanket and a car mirror hanger with a scannable barcode linking them directly to a dedicated page on the district’s website,” said Dr. Moore. “Lovie blankets are also known as security blankets, providing comfort and easing stress and anxiety for babies and toddlers.”

These items will be distributed through the district’s partnership with Reach Out and Read SC, an organization dedicated to bridging the literacy gap by providing books to infants and toddlers through their network of pediatricians.

The website offers free, easy-to-access tools and guidance for social and emotional learning, cognitive development, early language and literacy, physical well-being, and inquiry and exploration at home.

Quinne Evans is the Director of the Center for Child Development @ Anna Boyd in Richland Two. “When families scan the QR code they can then click icons that will take them to activities they can do with their child for specific development skills. This is something that families can go to and easily implement in their daily lives that will lead to confident, curious Richland Two graduates, ready to lead and serve in the future,” said Evans.

This initiative represents a forward approach to bridging readiness gaps and equipping families for success from the very start of their child’s educational journey. The webpage address is: www.richland2.org/foundationsforlearning.
